The burn test: the most definitive
Silk is a protein fiber. Polyester is a plastic. They burn differently, and the difference is immediately obvious.
Real silk: Pull a single thread from an inconspicuous seam. Hold it to a lighter flame. It will burn slowly and smell like burning hair or feathers, because silk is a protein, like hair. It produces a small amount of gray-black ash that crumbles to powder when you press it. It self-extinguishes when the flame is removed.
Polyester satin: The thread will melt rather than burn, dripping into a bead. It smells like burning plastic or chemicals. The residue is a hard plastic bead that doesn't crumble. It may continue burning even after the flame is removed.
This test is 100% reliable. If a pillowcase produces a hard plastic bead when a thread is burned, it's not silk, regardless of what the label says. Only attempt this test outdoors or over a non-flammable surface with a single pulled thread, never with the full pillowcase.
The feel test
Real silk has a specific tactile signature. It's cool to initial touch, then warms quickly to your body temperature. It has a slight "scroop", the subtle sound silk makes when two folds rub against each other. The surface feels smooth but not slippery like plastic.
Polyester satin is slippery and feels uniformly warm because synthetic fibers don't conduct heat away from your hand the way protein fibers do. It may feel smooth, but the smoothness has a slightly plasticky quality. There's no scroop, polyester rubbed against itself is nearly silent or makes a dry squeaking sound.
This test requires having felt real silk before to calibrate. If you've never handled quality silk, the comparison won't mean much in isolation. Order a small silk swatch from a reputable fabric retailer for reference.
The ring test (limited but useful)
Real mulberry silk can be pulled through a wedding ring or similar small opening, the fibers are fine enough and the fabric drape is soft enough to glide through. Polyester satin tends to catch or resist because the fibers are thicker and stiffer, even when woven smoothly.
This test is less reliable than the burn test because very fine polyester can sometimes pass, but it's fast and non-destructive. A silk pillowcase should feel like it wants to flow; a polyester one feels like it's holding its shape.
The price floor test
Real mulberry silk at 22-25 momme has a raw material cost floor that makes anything under $30 highly suspect. The math: 2,500 to 3,000 silkworm cocoons are required to produce a single pound of raw silk. Grade 6A production is more selective still. Manufacturing, finishing, shipping, and retail margin all sit on top of a materials cost that doesn't exist for synthetic fabric.
Quality silk pillowcases reliably land between $40 and $90. Premium and ultra-luxury brands go higher, often without proportional increase in material quality. Anything under $30 labeled "silk" is either polyester, very low momme silk (12-16) that won't perform well or last, or silk blended with synthetics that dilute the benefits.

The specification check
Every legitimate silk pillowcase listing should state four things: momme weight, silk grade, fiber type, and weave.

- Silk grade: 6A is the highest. Lower grades (A, 3A, 5A) have shorter fibers and rougher surfaces.
- Fiber type: Mulberry silk from Bombyx mori is the standard for bedding. Tussar, Eri, and Muga silks have different protein profiles suited to other uses.
- Weave: Charmeuse is the standard for pillowcases, the glossy, smooth satin-style weave using real silk threads.

- The word "silky" is used instead of "silk"

- The material is described as "silk blend" without percentages
- Care instructions mention "machine wash, tumble dry high" (real silk requires delicate cycle and cool water)
- No momme weight listed
- Bulk pack deals (2 for $15, 4 for $25), these are essentially always polyester

Certifications that add confidence
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification verifies that the fabric has been tested for harmful substances, it doesn't verify that the fabric is silk, but it does verify that whatever it is has been tested for safety. GOTS certification (Global Organic Textile Standard) applies specifically to organic silk production and is rarer but meaningful. Neither certification replaces the burn test for verifying fiber type, but both add credibility on the safety and processing dimensions.
