I know this by way of my own hair going through something the chemotherapy brochures don't quite prepare you for. Somewhere in the middle of the chemotherapy I've written about elsewhere in the corpus, my hair didn't fall out the way chemo hair falls out in movies. It left in patterns. A receding edge here. A bald patch there. The strands that remained went coarse and dry and dramatically more frizzy than the hair I'd had in my life. Six months in, my hair had the texture of hay. My 13-year-old daughter, who is incapable of lying to me, told me it looked so bad I should just shave my head.

That was the day the pillowcase decision I'd been casual about became a pillowcase decision that mattered. When your hair is already this fragile, everything that touches it counts, and cotton was doing damage that showed in the mirror by morning. Silk was one of the small variables I could control in the middle of a season when almost nothing else was in my control. It didn't repair what chemo had done. Nothing environmental does. But it stopped the daily compounding of friction damage on hair that had almost nothing left to lose. My hair started to feel like hair again months later. Silk wasn't the whole reason. But it was part of the reason.

What frizz actually is

Frizz is a cuticle problem. Healthy hair has a flat, sealed cuticle that reflects light (which is why it looks glossy) and holds moisture inside the hair shaft. When the cuticle lifts, because of damage, dryness, friction, or humidity, three things happen. Light scatters instead of reflecting, which makes hair look dull. Moisture escapes through the openings, which makes the hair shaft shrink and roughen. And the lifted edges catch on adjacent hairs, creating the fluffy, uncontrolled appearance we call frizz.

People usually blame humidity, because humidity does make frizz worse. Water vapor enters the hair shaft through a lifted cuticle and changes its shape. But humidity doesn't create the lifted cuticle in the first place. Friction and dryness do. The overnight hours are where most of that damage happens, because that's when your hair experiences the most repeated mechanical stress. How cotton creates frizz while you sleep

Cotton fiber has a rough, absorbent surface. When hair moves across cotton, 30 to 60 times per night on average as you shift position, the fabric catches on the cuticle and lifts it further along the strand. At the same time, cotton absorbs the natural oils that keep the cuticle flat and sealed, plus any leave-in conditioner, serum, or oil you applied. You wake up with lifted cuticles, stripped moisture, and the fluffy result: frizz.

The effect compounds. Each night on cotton adds a little more cuticle disruption. Over weeks, hair that was glossy and smooth when you started a routine begins to look rougher, drier, and more prone to flyaways, and most people assume the problem is their shampoo, their products, or their hair itself. It's usually the pillowcase.

Why silk reduces frizz overnight

Silk addresses both causes of overnight frizz.

Friction. Silk's coefficient of friction is approximately 7.4%, one of the lowest of any textile. Cotton sits in roughly the 50% range. Hair glides across silk without catching, which means the cuticle stays flat instead of being lifted further with each movement.

Moisture. Silk absorbs about 30% less moisture than cotton. Your hair's natural oils and applied products stay on your hair instead of being wicked into the fabric. Moisture inside the hair shaft keeps the cuticle sealed and the strand supple. A dry, dehydrated cuticle lifts. A well-hydrated one stays flat.

Together, these two mechanisms eliminate the overnight environment that produces frizz in the first place.

Frizz by hair type

Straight and fine hair. Frizz here usually appears as flyaways and crown fluff rather than overall fluffiness. Silk dramatically reduces the static and surface roughness that cause these flyaways. The morning difference is often a visibly smoother top layer.

Wavy hair. Wavy hair has a slightly raised cuticle by nature, which makes it more frizz-prone than straight hair. The frizz tends to appear at the mid-lengths and ends. Curly and coily hair. This is where friction-induced frizz is most visible, because curly cuticles are lifted further than wavy and more vulnerable to mechanical disruption. Cotton nightly damage is the single largest cause of the halo of frizz many curly wearers wake up with. Silk dramatically reduces it. Color-treated, bleached, or chemically processed hair. These processes compromise the cuticle directly, the cuticle is already partially lifted and damaged by treatment. That makes friction frizz significantly worse on cotton. Silk is particularly important for treated hair, where every additional source of cuticle damage shows.

Medically-altered hair: the frizz category no one else writes about

There's a subset of frizz-prone hair that most hair-care content ignores, and I fell into it accidentally. Hair that has been altered by chemotherapy, severe illness, postpartum shedding, thyroid disruption, or any major medical event that stresses the hair growth cycle, often changes in ways the person hasn't experienced before. Texture goes coarser or finer. Curl pattern can shift. Individual strands thin. The cuticle becomes less uniformly sealed. Whatever your hair was doing going into treatment isn't necessarily what it does coming out.

Medically-altered hair is more vulnerable to friction and moisture loss than baseline hair for a few specific reasons. The remaining strands are often weaker at the shaft while the roots are still under whatever cellular stress the underlying illness or treatment created. The cuticle is often disrupted by the same mechanisms that thinned or broke the strands in the first place. And the hair that hasn't fallen out is doing the whole cosmetic job while the follicles renegotiate what comes next. There's very little slack in the system.

If you're in this category, silk isn't a luxury. It's structural. The overnight friction on cotton damages medically-altered hair faster than it damages baseline hair, and the moisture stripped from a compromised cuticle shows more visibly in the morning. You can't reverse the changes that treatment made, that runs its own course on its own timeline, but you can stop the daily compounding of friction damage on hair that has less margin than usual. That's the specific difference silk made in my house, and it's the one I most wish someone had told me about before I lived through it.

Humidity still matters, silk just removes the other cause

Silk doesn't change the humidity in your environment. What silk does is keep the cuticle sealed overnight, so morning humidity has less to work with. A flat, well-hydrated cuticle lets less ambient moisture in than a lifted, dry one. You'll still see more frizz on humid days than dry ones, that's physics, but the starting point is better.

This is why people who live in humid climates tend to notice the silk difference fastest. The baseline is worse on cotton, so the improvement is larger.

There's a fifth honest limit that isn't about silk. It's about the industry. Blaming humidity for a friction problem is the anti-frizz industry's most convenient explanation, because humidity is uncontrollable and absolves them of a mechanical solution that would work but wouldn't sell any product. That practice, selling chemical solutions to mechanical problems, is what this post is against.

Why proper silk matters for frizz specifically

Every benefit above depends on the silk actually staying smooth over time. Lower-momme silk develops surface roughness after repeated washing, which partially reintroduces the friction that causes frizz in the first place. For frizz-prone hair, and especially for medically-altered hair or color-treated hair that's more vulnerable to any friction, the fabric surface staying consistently smooth is what makes the benefit compound instead of erode.
